These Generals and Admirals were the Heads of the Coup in Turkey

Who motivated and commanded the approximately 6000 soldiers involved in the failed coup in Turkey?

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has blamed a “parallel structure” – a reference to Fethullah Gülen, a former ally and now arch enemy. But Mr Gülen told “he condemned in the strongest terms, the attempted military coup in Turkey”. He lives in exile in the United States. Turkey demanded to expel him.

The government has planed before to kick-out 600 officers connected to the Gülen movement. Maybe this triggered the coup.

Now Erdogan wants to clean the forces from all anti AKP opposition elements, he told in his first statement. He even dared to say it was “a present by God, as now we can purify the military.”

GLOBALO researched in Turkey:

• The military was divided. General Hulusi Akar, the loyal Chief of Staff, was arrested by the coup military, and with other military not involved. He was appointed by president Erdogan, who has placed his people in the military over the last years.
• More than 6,000 soldiers have been detained, including 100 generals and admirals. Even Mr Erdogan’s top military aide Colonel Ali Yazici is now in custody.

Among the arrests:

• General Bekir Ercan Van, the commander of Incirlik air base in the south used by US-led coalition and German jets to counter ISIS in Syria, here greeting US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter

• These generals – as more in the military – follow state founder Atatürk and mistrust Erdogan as a political Islamist who has rejects modern Turkey’s secular heritage, the foundation of the state in tradition with the father of all Türks (Atatürk).
• Turkey is now the only dictatorship within the NATO alliance. Can or should it stay in the alliance of democracies any more? Even become a member in the family of democracies in Europe, called the European Union?
• Erdogan has mistrusted the military and built up a heavily armed and loyal police force with strong AKP influence, which was now used against the soldiers with much success.

U.S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry said in Brussels that NATO will be scrutinizing Turkey in coming days to ensure that it fulfills the alliance’s requirement that members adhere to democratic governance. “NATO also has a requirement with respect to democracy,” he said.
