SYRIAN BISHOP ELIAS TOUMEH: NATIONAL IDENTITY NEEDED

GLOBALO breakfast at Munich Security Conference

During the Munich Security Conference 2016 Globalo invited stakeholder and experts to an informal exchange over breakfast on “Codes of Tolerance: Christian Minorities and Daesh.”

All participants agreed on the need to establish safe zones in Syria and Iraq that would allow displaced populations to start the process of rebuilding.

One of the main topics discussed was the question of minorities.

Bishop Elias Toumeh, the Antiochian Orthodox Bishop of Pyrgou, made the case that the establishment of a common Syrian citizenship and national identity is the pathway towards overcoming devisions.

10 percent of the Syrian are Christians.

From these 1,8 million, one third have left the country.

Many live still within Syria, but threatened by bombs and extremists.

After 2000 years, the end of Christianity has become a real danger.
