In director Danny Boyle’s latest installment to the series, a mysterious message sets Bond on a trail that leads him to the sinister organization SPECTRE. The acronym is of course short for Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion.

Before the movie could be made, producers had to go through a lengthy battle of their own regarding the rights to the evil organization SPECTRE. Writer Kevin McClory had been holding the film rights to the novel Thunderball ever since he had won a court case against Bond inventor Ian Fleming in 1963. This had made possible the non-canonical Never Say Never Again, that prompted Sean Connery to return into Her Majesties’ Secret Service for one last time in 1983. At that time, Roger Moore had already taken over the part at MGM. In  2013 the rights were bought by the studio.
