According to Gerlach

– The West has missed a big part of the story in the Syrian conflict by focusing exclusievly on the Assad regime on the one hand, and the various rebel groups on the other. What has been left out of this limited ´perspective ithe ordinary Syrians, which constitute the most formidable force in the country.

– Any political solution must first aim at sopping the bloodshed. Most armed groups active in Syrai right now, inclding the Assad regime would lose all legitimacy and inded their very need to exist, if the killing can be stopped. Only then the path is free to persue a post crisis settlemetnt
