Trump made his first speech as the official party nominee, and it was quite a long speech. At over one hour long, the speech was focused at attacking Hillary and detailing his policies.

  1. Highlights of Trump’s Acceptance Speech
  • Focused on Safety: “we will lead our country back to safety, prosperity, and peace”
    • Attacks on police
    • Terrorism on cities
  • “Beginning on January 20th 2017, safety will be restored”
  • “Basic duty of government is to defend the lives of its citizens”

2. Crime:

  • Progress rolled back by Obama Administration stance on criminal enforcement
  • Homicides increase largest in 25 years
  • 50% rise in number of police killed since last year
  • Nearly 200,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records are “roaming free”

3. Economy:

  • 40% of African-American children living in poverty
  • 58% youth unemployment among African Americans
  • Household income down $4,000 since year 2000
  • Trade deficit is $800 billion last year
  • Obama has doubled the national debt (experts say Trump can’t fix this)
  • Infrastructure is falling apart
  • 43 million Americans on food stamps

4. Foreign policy:

  • Humiliation after humiliation:
  • Iran held Navy sailors
  • Obama’s ‘red-line’ in Syria
  • Attack on Benghazi consulate

5. Trump blamed Hillary for ISIS, Libya, Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood, the Syrian Civil War, and the refugee crisis.

“This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: Death, destruction and terrorism and weakness.”

6. Trump’s “Action for America”: “Americanism, not globalism”

Put America first:

  1. Safety at home: neighborhoods, borders, and protection from terrorism
  2. Economy: reforms to add millions of jobs and add trillions in new wealth
  3. Education: “ensure that all of our kids are treated equally, and protected equally”
  4. Gay Rights: Trump vows to “do everything in my power” to protect our LGBTQ citizens.

7. On Terrorism, Trump said we need to do three things:

  1. Best intelligence gathering
  2. Abandon “nation-building” and work with allies to destroy ISIS and “Islamic terrorism”
  3. Suspend immigration from nations “compromised by terrorism”

8. On NATO:

NATO was obsolete because it did not cover terrorism. NATO announced it would set up a new program, and Trump said it was a “step in the right direction”

This speech was very different from most acceptance speeches. Most focus on a positive future for the country, but Trump took the time to highlight the darkness that America faces today. But perhaps that is the point. Trump wants to paint a picture that America is shrouded in darkness, and Donald Trump is the person to lead us out of the darkness and into the light.
